Malawi and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) commemorated 10 years or a decade since the establishment of their diplomatic relations at the Chinese Embassy Chancery on 12th December, 2017 in Lilongwe.

Malawi established diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) on 28th December, 2007. Embassies for the two countries were officially opened in Lilongwe and in Beijing, in January, 2008, and March, 2008 respectively.

Within a short span of their diplomatic relations, the two countries have enjoyed flourishing, cordial and mutually beneficial cooperation in various sectors.

As part of the celebrations, a delegation from China which was led by His Excellency Chen Xiaodong, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs paid a courtesy call on President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and had a working luncheon with Honorable Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The Chinese Deputy Minister also handed over 100 motor vehicles to the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and 8 protocol vehicles to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, respectively.

Furthermore, His Excellency Chen Xiadong announced a 301 million RMB grant to the Government of Malawi. 1 million RMB is for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

In receiving the grant, Honorable Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano M.P., indicated that the grant will help his Ministry carry out protocol activities easily across the country.

On his part, His Excellency Xiadong said China believes that the grant will help in implementing Malawi Government's projects under the Malawi-China Development Cooperation Framework. The 1 million RMB was targeted at enhancing capacity building in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Over the 10 years of this relationship, Malawi and China has developed a development cooperation framework under which various projects and programmes financed through grants and concessionary loans by the Government of China have been implemented. In addition, the Government of Malawi has benefitted in human capacity building through short and long term scholarships offered by the Government of China.

In his speech as guest of honor at the commemoration, Honorable Goodall Gondwe Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and development said Malawi is certain that over the next ten years to come, the Malawi- China partnership will reach greater heights and produce mutual benefits for the wellbeing of the people of the two nations.
"Our future looks bright but we will need to cooperate deeply and intensify our interaction across the board in order to consolidate the gains we have made so far. I look forward to such a time that Malawians, who have found China as their primary destination for business, should be in China as investors," Gondwe said.

In his remarks, His Excellency Chen Xiaodong, expressed his Governments firm commitment to cooperate with the Government of Malawi and also promised to intensify trade cooperation and open up economies to each other.

Apart from the 10 years celebration of this great cooperation, this year has been a very important year for Malawi's cooperation with China. The Malawi National Optic Fibre Backbone Programme was launched, an implementation agreement for the construction of five Community Technical Colleges across the country was signed, an international Seminar on the China Africa Cooperation was held, Malawi received a donation of two drones for disaster affairs management; and a significant number of scholarships for short term and long term courses were granted, among others.

In conclusion, the two countries are committed to further broaden areas of cooperation in the years ahead for mutual benefit of their peoples.
