Malawi and Russia to Strengthen Ties, 9th October, 2014

The Russian Ambassador to Malawi, who is based in Zimbabwe Mr. Sergey V. Bakharev paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Honourable Dr. George T. Chaponda, M.P., on 9th October, 2014.
During the meeting, Ambassador Bukharev indicated that trade between Russia and Malawi had now reached US$ 65 million annually mainly in tobacco and tea imports.
The Russian Ambassador also reassured Malawi of continued commitment to assisting Malawi in the sectors of health and disaster management, as exemplified by the donation of medical equipment to Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Zomba Central Hospitals in the 2013-2014 financial year, as well as the provision of US$1 million to the World Food Programme-Malawi for the purchase of relief food items.
The two countries also agreed to conclude a draft Protocol on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. The Protocol on Cooperation aims at enhancing bilateral cooperation on issues of mutual interest between Malawi and the Russian Federation
