Vice Foreign Minister of The People’s Republic of China Visits Malawi, 14th to 16th October, 2014

Mr. Zhang Ming, Vice Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China visited Malawi from 14th to 16th October, 2014. During the visit, the Vice Minister met with His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi on 16th October, 2014, after meeting Honourable Dr. George T. Chaponda M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on 14th October, 2014.

 

Following discussions, the two sides agreed that His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, should undertake a State Visit to the People’s Republic of China, on dates to be mutually agreed upon by the two Governments. The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister also announced a grant to Malawi amounting to RMB100 Million (approximately US$16 million) and an interest free loan of RMB 50 Million (approximately US$8 million). Furthermore, the two sides used the visit as an opportunity to strengthen the already existing bilateral cooperation and explored new potential areas of cooperation in various sectors of infrastructure development, education, capacity building, tourism, trade and investment. Lastly, Malawi and China agreed to strengthen cooperation under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

 

Malawi and Mozambique sign Memorandum of Understanding on Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, 23rd October, 2014

In pursuant to the resolution of the 2012 Malawi/Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation (JPCC) Meeting, Honourable Dr. Allan Chiyembekeza, M.P., Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development of the Republic of Malawi, and Honourable Victor Manuel Borges, Minister of Fisheries of the Republic of Mozambique, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Fisheries Management and Aquaculture Development, on behalf of their respective Governments. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development in Lilongwe on Thursday, 23rd October, 2014.

In his statement, the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development underlined the fact that the MoU was a veritable instrument, through which the two Governments would devise harmonised fisheries management strategies and operational procedures for sustainable exploitation of the fisheries resources. He further stated that the MoU also provides a mechanism for identifying management strategies that would facilitate recovery, following dwindling of fish catches from ecosystems like Lakes Malawi/Niassa, Chilwa/Chirua and Chiuta and the Shire River system.

Furthermore, the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development expressed the critical importance of including sustainable aquaculture development to supplement the declining fish supply.

In his remarks, Honourable Victor Manuel Borges, Minister of Fisheries of the Republic of Mozambique, stated that the Agreement will reinforce the sustainable management of the countries’ shared lake resources. It will also help in jointly addressing the problems of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the shared lakes and enhance the efforts of the two Governments in establishing closer economic cooperation.

The signing of the MoU is a milestone in the advancement of socio-economic and political relations between Malawi and Mozambique. This MoU will further deepen cooperation between the two countries.

Malawi and Spain to Strengthen Ties, 20th October, 2014.

The Charge D’ Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain  to Malawi, who is based in Harare, Zimbabwe, Ms Ximena Sartori, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Honourable Dr. George T. Chaponda, M.P., on 20th October, 2014.

 

During the meeting the two governments agreed to explore programmes that Malawi would benefit from Spain’s donation of US$5 million which was pledged to Malawi under the framework agreement on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Malawi and Spain signed in New York in September, 2014.

 

Furthermore, the two countries discussed the promotion of trade and investment and that Spanish investors could consider investing in the Nsanje World Inland Port, as well as in transportation on the Shire-Zambezi Waterway; mining; energy; and the GreenBelt Initiative (GBI).
