MALAWI-MALAYSIA RELATIONS

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

Malawi and Malaysia have cooperated in areas of communications, infrastructure development and technical assistance, particularly in the agricultural field.

In September 1996 two agreements on the Promotion of Bilateral Trade and Investment were signed between the Governments of Malawi and Malaysia.  The signing of the third agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation is still under consideration. Following the signing of these agreements, the Malawi Chamber of Commerce signed three Memoranda of Understanding with three Malaysian business entities on investment in financial services, insurance and mineral exploitation at the 2nd Langkawi International Dialogue “SMART Partnership for Global Prosperity” which took place in November 1996.

The Malaysian government indicated willingness to cooperate with Malawi in the following areas; debt servicing, irrigation, project identification and formulation, the Vision 2020 Project, attraction of foreign investors to Malawi through the Malaysia Industrial Development Agency (MIDAS).

On 11th February 2000, the Governments of Malawi and Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Technical Cooperation in Agriculture.   This memorandum outlined bilateral cooperation in the following areas of mutual interest: development and improvement in agriculture through exchange of seeds, breeds, species, experts, training; and transfer of technology.
