MALAWI-SPAIN RELATIONS
RELATIONS WITH MALAWI Relations between the Republic of Malawi and the Kingdom of Spain were established in 1973. The Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Harare, covers the Republic of Malawi, while the Malawi High Commission to the United Kingdom covers Spain. Both Malawi and Spain have Honorary Consuls representing the countries.
AREAS OF COOPERATION In August 1990, the Spanish Government provided a loan of ECU 8,160,000 to the Government of Malawi in support of phase III of the Rural Electrification Programme, which was implemented by ESCOM. Spain has also offered short term training opportunities to Malawi, in areas of technology, agricultural productivity, security and trade promotion.  As a member of the European Union (EU), Spain assists Malawi through the EU programmes, in addition to bilateral aid.
Malawi has also participated in various trade, cultural and technological international exhibitions which were hosted by the Government of Spain. Areas of possible cooperation include health as well as trade.
CONCLUSION The Government of Malawi will continue to enhance its relations with Spain.
