The 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union elected Mrs Thandikile Patience Mbvundula as a Female Member of the Southern African Region of the African Space Council (ASC) and subsequently Vice President of the body. The elections took place on 15th February, 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mrs. Mbvundula, who is also Chairperson of the Malawi Soaxe Council and works for MACRA, has been elected for a 4 year term. Honourable Nancy Tembo, M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, receiving in audience Ms. Angele Makombo N'tumba, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration, on 9th February, 2024. Ms. N'tumba is in Malawi to participate in the Programme for improving Fisheries Governance and Blue Economy Trade Corridors and to attend a handover ceremony of equipment for the Profishblue Project in Sengabay, from 5th to 9th February, 2024. As part of the process, Ms. N'tumba called on Hon. Tembo to express SADC's appreciation to the Malawi Government for its contribution to the SADC fisheries sector. Ms. N'tumba also thanked Malawi for ratifying various SADC Protocols, but requested for ratification of three additional protocols affecting tourism development, seed varieties, and plant diversity. |

Honourable Nancy Tembo, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, receiving in audience Dr Bruno Nogueira, Co-founder of Videre Surgical Clinic of Brazil and Honorary Consul-Designate of the Republic of Malawi in the City of Belo Horizonte, on 1st February, 2024. Dr Nogueira called on Hon. Tembo at the end of his successful visit to Malawi to brief her on highlights of the visit. Among other engagements, Dr. Nogueira paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, on 30th January, 2024. Dr. Nogueira also held meetings with officials in the Ministries of Health and Local Government, Culture and Unity as well as the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) and the Lilongwe City Council. Dr Nogueira, an eye specialist by profession, intends to perform 1000 cataract surgeries in Malawi in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in April, 2024, in order to contribute to the well-being of the people of Malawi. Additionally, Dr Nogueira is working towards the establishment of an Ophthalmological training institution in Malawi as well as promoting Brazilian investments into Malawi. |
Inauguration of the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Morocco |
Honourable Nancy Tembo, M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, officially inaugurating the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, on 18th December, 2023. The inauguration of the embassy (which began its operations in August, 2023) marks an important milestone in the evolution of the Malawi-Morocco relations, after Morocco established its own embassy in Lilongwe in 2022. Prior to the inauguration ceremony, Honourable Tembo held discussions with her Moroccan counterpart, His Excellency Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, at the end of which the two officials signed a joint communique. Malawi-Morocco bilateral relations will focus on cooperation in agriculture, tourism and mining, in line with both Governments' interests.
