Malawi Honours Pledge of Humanitarian Support to Mozambique On 6th April, 2022, Malawi donated 30 metric tonnes of beans to the Mozambican Government to support people affected by terrorist incursions in Cabo Delgado Province. The donation follows the pledge that His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera made during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extra-Ordinary Summit Meeting held at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on 12th January, 2022, on the SADC Mission in Mozambique. Handing over the beans on behalf of the Malawi Government during a ceremony held in Tete Province, Mozambique, the Malawi Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Mr Charles Kalemba, said the gesture symbolised the solidarity within the SADC region and the friendship between Their Excellencies President Chakwera and President Filipe Nyusi. Kalemba said the people of Cabo Delgado province were going through the trauma of displacement, hence the need for assistance. Receiving the donation on behalf of the Mozambican Government, the President of the National Institute for Disaster Management, Luisa Celma Meque, saluted the gesture by the Malawi Government to minimise the suffering of the affected people. Celma Meque said while Mozambique was dealing with the terrorist incursions in Cabo Delgado, the affected population got subjected to flooding disasters occasioned by the impacts of Tropical Storm ANA and Cyclone GOMBE. “On behalf of our President, we extend our utmost gratitude to President Chakwera, his government and the people of Malawi, for honouring the pledge and reaching out to our people suffering from effects of terrorist attacks and the effects of Cyclones ANA and GOMBE,” said Celma Meque. |
