The Directorate of Asia, Australia & the Pacific is responsible for advancing Malawi’s social-economic, political, cultural and environmental interests with other countries and international organizations in the Asia, Australia and the Pacific region, with the aim of forging mutually beneficial cooperation and partnership, through development diplomacy – a core mandate of the Malawi Foreign Policy. The main countries that the Government of Malawi collaborates with in the Asia, Australia and the Pacific region, include Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Thailand, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Vietnam. The Directorate is also a focal point on development initiatives under the North-South Cooperation like the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) and the South-South Cooperation, such as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the India-Africa Summit Forum (IASF). The Directorate manages affairs of three Malawi missions in Beijing, New Delhi and Tokyo. The Directorate also interfaces with resident missions of China, India and Japan in Lilongwe.
Malawi Embassy in Tokyo, Japan The Malawi Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, mainly facilitates development cooperation, trade, investment, technical cooperation. The Mission supports the transfer of high level technology. It also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Australia, Brunei, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, South Korea, and other Pacific Island countries on a non-residential basis.
Malawi High Commission in New Delhi, India The Malawi High Commission in New Delhi, India, mainly facilitates development and technical cooperation; trade; investment; tourism; training and capacity building; transfer of technology and consular matters. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka on a non-residential basis.
Malawi Embassy in Beijing, China The Malawi Embassy in Beijing, China, mainly facilitates development and technical cooperation; trade; investment; tourism; training and capacity building; transfer of technology, and consular matters. The Mission also serves as a base for management of Malawi’s bilateral relations with Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, North Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam on a non-residential basis.
