FOREIGN RELATIONS AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST DIRECTORATE The Africa and Middle East Directorate manages Malawi’s relations with countries and intergovernmental bodies based in Africa and the Middle East. It coordinates the implementation of the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Diaspora Engagement Policy which aim at maximizing Malawi national interest in the region. Malawi has a total of eight (8) Diplomatic Missions in Africa namely: Mozambique; Zambia; Tanzania; Zimbabwe; South Africa; Kenya; Ethiopia; and Egypt and it hosts residential missions of seven (7) African countries namely: Egypt, South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. In the Middle East, Malawi has an embassy in Kuwait and a consulate in Dubai. Malawi also hosts representative offices of some regional and continental organisations such as the AU, COMESA and Africa Development Bank.

AMERICAS DIRECTORATE The Americas Directorate manages Malawi’s relations with countries in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, and intergovernmental bodies that are based in that part of the World. Malawi has two (2) diplomatic missions in the Americas namely Brasilia (Brazil) and Washington in the United States of America (USA), and a Permanent Mission to the United Nations based in New York. The Directorate coordinates the implementation of the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Diaspora Engagement Policy which aim at maximizing Malawi national interest in the Americas region. Brazil and USA have resident diplomatic missions in Malawi. The World Bank and the United Nations (UN) also have resident missions in the country.

ASIA, AUSTRALIA AND PACIFIC DIRECTORATE The Asia, Australia and the Pacific Directorate manages Malawi’s relations with countries and intergovernmental bodies in that region. The Directorate coordinates the implementation of the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy in Asia, Australia and the Pacific region. Malawi has resident Missions in China, India and Japan and all the three countries also have their resident Missions in Malawi.
Malawi Embassy in Tokyo, Japan The Malawi Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, mainly facilitates development cooperation, trade, investment, technical cooperation. The Mission supports the transfer of high level technology. It also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Australia, Brunei, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, South Korea, and other Pacific Island countries on a non-residential basis.

EUROPE DIRECTORATE The Europe Directorate manages Malawi’s relations with countries in the European region, and intergovernmental bodies that are based in that part of the World. It coordinates the implementation of the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy, which aim at maximizing Malawi’s interests and promoting mutually beneficial relations with European countries. Malawi has four (4) diplomatic missions in Europe, based in Berlin (Germany), London (United Kingdom), Brussels (Belgium), and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Malawi to the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland). The following five (5) European countries have resident missions in Malawi: The United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Germany and Norway. The European Union (EU) also has a resident mission.
